Sign of the times

It has been a week since I had time to continue with this blog.  A lot has happened in this last week.  Just after my last post we applied for our occupancy permit.  We have not heard back about that yet.  The contractor has finished most of the work and is just putting on the finishing touches inside.  The walls are painted an off white, the cathedral ceiling is white, makes the room look even larger.  The linoleum is now in and the trim molding is up.  Mostly exterior work remains.  We were so excited we had to start decorating to liven up the outside.  As you can see by the photos the benches I started to disassemble are now refinished and in place.  We brought down several large planters.  Add some straw bales, corn stalks, pumpkins and gourds for some color.  And last but not least a sign letting everyone know we are coming soon!  I wanted to bring some mums down for more color but we decided to keep it simple until we are actually moving in.  Moving in is tentative for this coming week...October 1st is still the date.  Check out the latest photos I took over this last week.

20 years ago my wife Michele and I met for the first time.  Sharing a love for horticulture and motorcycling brought us together for what has been years of true pleasure.  Since then we have devoted time and energy into a shared dream of owning and operating our own Flower Shop.  Along the way we have paid our dues working for almost all of the local shops and garden centers taking note of all the successes and failures.  During that time we were blessed with two children raising them in the flower shop right next to us and they have grown to love horticulture too.  For almost two years now we have been seriously looking for a local building to house our little shop.  It was important that it was located locally within our small community of Womelsdorf, nearby Robesonia or Wernersville.  These are the communities that have supported us over the last two decades; allowed us to build tremendous relationships and a commitment to return the favor.  Several months ago we started discussions with a local business owner after seeing a sign in his window stating “building for rent".  It was close by, the price was excellent and everything just seemed right.  The owner was in the process of completely remodeling the store and was in search of someone just like us.  And so has ended the journey of just a dream and now to start a new journey to reap the fruits of our labors.  Over these last few months we have begun acquiring store fixtures and displays.  Add these to the ever-growing inventory of supplies, a floral cooler and everything else you could possibly need to the space that we call home.  This could not have happened any later as we are running out of space and I might have to move into the van.  We have been patiently waiting for the calls.  First one was come on down and let’s talk about where you would like the light fixtures installed.  Where do the phone system and electrical outlets need to be installed?  The sink.  Long story but the sink is where it has to be.  Older buildings and plumbing are two words that never go well in a sentence together.  Then we wait some more.  At last, a chance meeting at the bank with a quick update...the dry wall is up...can you come down sometime next week to look at flooring?  Next week!?  YES!  Well, today is that day.  All of our discussion and dreams were coming to fruition.  We picked out our flooring...slate texture linoleum, it's practical and cost effective don't laugh, in a beige tone.  We also made a conscious decision to start clean up NOW.  We need to let everyone know we are coming and the outside looks like, well a contractor is working there.  Not the best advertisement.  Don't get me wrong we have been spreading the word to everyone we know and even more we don't.  However, time is of the essence now.  So we embarked on a cleaning project, some pictures and my thought of why not share this with everyone else. And so this blog was created.  Our dream and I want to share it with everyone.  Everyone who made it possible and those who will continue to make it possible.  I am planning on blogging our entire journey.  Join us if you like.  I welcome your thoughts, opinions and suggestions.  I will follow each entry with photos of our progress.  Check out today’s.  Thanks for listening.
